Pfft how dare they make an arcade shooter and have the gall to call it flashpoint...

I think the funniest bit is how they were describing it at its first playthrough demo as a tactical "realistic" shooter then he came out with the immortal like...

"Now as you can see I have been shot in the head, its not serious but I am bleeding quite badly..."

I cried laughing.

Hello guys! (Like the new forum look Razor!)

Mine arrived on Tuesday (pre-order Play.com)...I have writen up my first thoughs on my new blog here: http://milgeek.blogspot.com/2009/10/operation-flashpoint-2-first-thoughts.html

...But to cut to the chase, it's definately better than ArmA2, in that it actually works and doesn't throw your PC into a system meltdown! :)

I think calling it 'realistic' is a relative term, I was playing a bit of CoD4 and BF2 last night after a few online co-op games of OFP2 and compared to them it's definately more realistic, LOL!

Image
Above: My AI team in a co-op mission - some have complained about the graphics, but I think they are nicely ballanced between looking good (not fantastic) and allowing for non-laggy online gaming. Hopefully someone will be working on a British Army mod!

If you get a few of your mates together to play the co-op missions and are equiped with VOIP (like TeamSpeak or Ventrilo) the game comes into it's own. ANd the AI isn't half bad - I stopped playing during a firefight last night just to watch the AI enemy being very sneaky and flanking my unit through some wooded area on or right - they actually crawled through the undergrowth and popped up right next to us.

Caught in the open the AI will make a good attempt to get to cover and the try and locate your position.

Of course most people will be interested in the advesarial modes where you take on a team of real enemy - I had a couple of games of these and they are quite fun - snipers will have a field day because of the rural nature of the maps (havn't seen an urban type map yet).

As a veteran of the original Ghost Recon game I was very please with the atmosphere and ordering system in the single player mode - and the weapons are pretty cool too. Not only have they included the Mk. 17 (H) SCAR - but the Chinese weapons include the lovely Type 95.

I know CoD4/2 is just around the corner - but between these two games they should cover everyone's tastes. OFP2 if you fancy a more tactical and thoughtfully paces game, and CoD4/2 when you want a frantic nade fest! :)

(And even better the new STALKER is on it's way as well!)

DEFINATELY WORTH THE £17!

i got this for my ps3 the day it came out and it sucks big time.

i love tactical shooting games, but this is abysmal. the friendly ai is so numb im surprised they don't shoot each other the minute the level loads and the enemy NPC are nigh on invulnerable even after two headshots. The naff loading times are uncalled for especially on a ps3 and the multiplayer servers being screwed up.

It may be a different situation for PC gamers, but on console in my opinion: EPIC FAIL.

If you want a decent single player tactical shooter id probably go with COD. If your into multiplayer/clan team games like i am Socom Confrontation all the way.

My surmise of of OF:DR

1) Takes too long to do anything but the game doesn't give you any time to do anything
2) takes too long to order your team mates around, even then, they don't follow orders
3) Your team mates NEVER duck, even under heavy fire
4) Your team mates will not do what you tell them too
5) You cannot heal your team mates as they seem to want to stay at least 10m away from you (regardless if you told them to halt/defend position)
6) Your team mates are stupid
7) Even the WORST soldier in the world can stand up AND reload at the same time
8) If I can't see the enemy, how can they see me
9) If I load a Queen Bee, SMAW, SAM missile, why then, when I swap to a rifle/grenade/binocular/ipod do I have to reload it (again) when I want to use it
10) If it's supposed to be realistic, please lets never go to war with the Chinese. I shot one of the bastarts 8 times and he still runs towards me shooting (and never reloading), they are hard as fek!!

Tried my hardest to like this game and, to be honest, there were moments when the sun shone through and it was great,, but they were few and far between. Totally destroyed by very poor squad AI, over fiddly command system and the fact that it was about as much fun as nailing your testicles to BA 737 and then announcing it was time to board for Singapore...

Games are supposed to be fun...

Agreed!!
Finally, someone with the same view on it as me!Most of the people I know who've got it seem to be under some kind of spell that makes them think it's awesome! Eh!?

If I may add a few things.
11) Vehicles are pathetic and if you're driving a Hummer or whatever on Harcore, you can't even move your guy's head!
12) For a game that's boasts about it's massive map, and it's freedom to play the game however you like, it's totally linear!
13) After spending 10 minutes getting into a player Vs player match, you'll wish you hadn't bothered! It's terrible!
14) Despite this being apparently a "Realistic" shooter, you still can't seem to step over a rock!
15) Not being able to switch weapon while moving is bad enough, but you can't even tell your guys to stop (not that they'd do it anyway)! Who can't walk and talk at the same time!

I do like being able to call in fire missions, getting an occasional head shot from a fair distance, and playing it on Harcore with 3 other humans that don't already know each mission step by step is actually quite good fun.. Overall though, it's a fairly bad game.

I was expecting this game to drop me on the Island at the start, and let me go about objectives however I wanted. When in reality, it's just short, linear, boring missions...

completley agree, it's a useless, sore let down of what could have been a great game.

Just on a different note, they had a suspected fire at Grainger Games in Bishop last night. I had to smash the door down to gain access, then my boss dragged me away as....apparently....I was standing at the door looking like "a kid in a sweetie shop!"

To make it worse, the manager told me that all the pre-order the copies of CoD:MW2 were in the safe....MY COPY OF CoD:MW2 WAS IN THAT SAFE....so near yet so far away

I think she was pulling my leg though, they can't have been distributed already, could they? :?

I gotta agree that Dragon Rising is a bit of a letdown. All the same points as George and Toes have made. And I thought the online was a bit sucky too.

BUT!!!!!! i have been playing the beta for MAG and i have to say the online is mental. 200 plus players online at once shooting the crap out of everything. Not sure if its coming out for xbox but if it is, its well worth a try.

Must admit i was disappointed with this - played the 1 player version and completed within hours. It is also very repeatitive.

Took my copy into gamestation on Saturday and swapped it for FIFA 10. What a result - i only paid £27 for Flashpoint and they gave me £30 off FIFA. Hoorah.
