Landwarrior / Futurewarrior Kit

Postby Blackwind on Thu Aug 06, 2009 8:50 pm

For the last few months I've been working on a project. What drove me to start it is beyond me, but it’s a little late for that now. Anyway, I’ve been building a replica of the American Landwarrior Kit (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFGsmjeOYi8 for a brief introduction).
This naturally isn’t a 1:1 copy of the system, but it does include a system of wireless cameras linked to a helmet mounted Head-up-display.
Projects like this tend to be prohibitively expensive, but I’m glad to say this is not the case here thanks to some bargain buys (thank god for ebay).
I’m most of the way through the project now, it’s taken me 3-4 months due to life getting in the way, the fact I hate soldering and a few difficulties resolving some development problems.
I’m planning to post pictures and a how-to style thread in the near future, but want to finish the main unit of the kit first.
There are a few development problems I still need to address, so I’ll also be using this thread to get some help from you guys.

Let me know what you think.

Cheers

A camera on the gun that you can see from?

This is really going to play havok with the 'blind fire' part of the safety brief.

There will be a weapon cam and a remote cam or two. I'm just having some fun getting the signal between wireless reciever and display sorted out, back to digging round electronics manuals for answers.

I've had a chat with Razor, and the long and short will be that the weapon cam can be used for recon, but not firing round corners as it's not safe or fair on other players.

Right, got the signal issue just about under control, prototype is built. This is just the proof of concept so it currently only supports one camera. THe switch gear is still an issue. Depending how far i get with it tomorrow i might bring it along to the game day on sunday for anyone who's interested to have a look. I'm tired now and my lungs are full of solder...

I'll be bring the kit with me, just bear in mind that it's rough as this is just the prototype.

I should be able to build more units, there are a few development issues to cover and getting your hands on the head-up displays is an issue. The most important thing to find is a 'spy gear - ATV 360' which is a kids toy. (http://www.amazon.com/Wild-Planet-Gear- ... B0016A7PGU) i got a couple from ebay cheaply, ($30) - they come up for sale quite regularly. So keep looking if you're keen to build your own kit or get your hands on a cool toy.

I'm not promising to build more, yet. Wait till i've costed up the parts and labour.
